How do you pit in Nascar without losing your place?

If I were in first place and I needed new tires, am I just screwed? Obviously, I don't know squat about Nascar.

In most situations they pit under caution so all the cars come down pit road at get serviced.

Under the green flag, the leader will drop to back quite a few places depending on whether or not other cars pit also. In most situations they will "cycle" through, meaning all the other cars end up pitting and the racing order in general is restored.
